Unrest as Constitutional Referendum Nears

As a November 17th constitutional referendum nears, tensions rise. Despite being disallowed by the police, Members of the three major opposition parties joined for a political rally yesterday in the capital, Antananarivo. Armed police units prevented the political protesters from convening in a popular rugby stadium as they had planned. After the use of tear gas on the ever-gathering crowd, most scattered but the protest was not finished. Vandalism and confrontations continued with several vehicles set ablaze and at least one person receiving serious injures.
