Education does not end at Akany's front gate. This year our eager students and children got to continue learning even during the big school vacation. Thanks to a generous donation from Les Enfants de l’Ile Rouge, a registered charity based in Reunion and longtime sponsor of Akany Avoko, we were able to take of the children on a week-long educational field trip to Antsirabe and the wilds and wonders of Ranomafana National Park.

Due to our many, many children and our busy schedules. We had to break up the students into 3 groups. The final and smallest group returned on Halloween from their week of education and adventure. They were able to visit many of the same places the first 2 groups enjoyed (please see Education and Aventure (part 1) for all the photos and details) like the national park and the thermal hot springs at Ranomafana and the volcanic lakes around Antsirabe. But hey also had some wonderful experiences of their own.

The students did not get to marvel at all the new technology of the beverage bottling plant in Antsirabe like the first groups, but they did get to see the great-great grandfather of all that technology when they visited an aluminum smelting and casting shop. Here they saw some very skilled and daring men, melting aluminum up to 660 degrees Celsius and then pouring the molten red metal into sand casts, handmade just minutes before.

The main addition to the trip was a 2-night stay at scientific research and conservation station operated by the Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership. There the students did a night walk and saw the rare and very elusive Aye-Aye (with a baby!). They planted trees as part of a reforestation effort. And saw 2 species of lemurs very up close and personal during 2 mountain hikes. There will be much more about this part of the adventure in another post coming up in a few days.
